One of the striking features of the second Grand Prix Final
was the number of cars who were forced out of the race in
the warm up! Aggressive driving during the warm up has always
been problematic in Race Day heats, but that wasn't the case
here as Sponne, Coopers and Hillside suffered either engine
failure, or in the case of Hillside, severe damage after being
rescued by a marshall. The main sufferers were Quarrydale,
who were upended by Langley Park before the race started and
were not seen again for the remainder of the day.
As the race proper started it soon became clear that we were
to have a different winner, with Darrick Wood struggling from
the outset. Champions Langley Park raced their spare car and
were the early pace setters, but it didn't take long for Kirk
Hallam to stamp their authority on the race. Perhaps the fewer
cars on the track suited the team from Derbyshire, as they
were able to pick their way through any trouble far more easily
to set an incredible average lap time of 14.51 seconds. Although
their 29 laps was one short of Darrick Wood's from GP1, they
also managed to win by a convincing five lap margin.
To their credit, Lord Williams and Pennsnett both completed
over 20 laps, whilst Ash Manor finally got some track time.
The only car from GP1 not to complete laps, Marlborough School,
also scored, completing 7 laps.
